Medical Oversight for Wilderness EMS

Description:

Wilderness EMS has many realms and with each comes special considerations that differ from the traditional ‘front country’ EMS world.  The traditional rules of practicing medicine sometimes have to be broken in order to best care for the patient in a ‘wilderness setting’.  Medical oversight of Wilderness EMS presents a challenge as it must allow the pre-hospital provider to take care of the patient in whatever austere environment they find themselves in without the usual resources.

This lecture will lead the group through some of the topics unique to medical oversight of Wilderness EMS and what protocols and other skills can be implemented to optimize care of patients in the wilderness setting.

Objectives:

1. Explore the realms of Wilderness Medicine

2. Discuss medical oversight issues for Wilderness EMS

3. Provide an overview of Wilderness EMS protocols and groups
