Wilderness EMS Medical Director Course Information

As a concurrent track within the WMS Desert Medicine Conference, we are pleased to be able to offer a unique opportunity co-sponsored by the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP).

Across the country, physicians are frequently asked to serve as medical directors of wilderness EMS systems. Such systems include ski patrols, backcountry rescue teams, wilderness education programs, summer camps, open water lifeguard rescue, technical rescue teams, traditional and tactical EMS teams with austere medical needs, and many other programs. Some physicians come into these roles with copious wilderness skills but little EMS experience or training. Others have strong EMS backgrounds but limited wilderness exposure.

Recognizing the need for a training program that prepares physicians for these roles and fills these training and experiential holes, we will be offering the Wilderness EMS Medical Director Course during our Desert Medicine Conference.  The curriculum has been developed with input from experts drawn from both NAEMSP and WMS.  Portions of the Medical Director Course will serve as a separate track, while others will be woven into the WMS conference itself.  This offers participants a special opportunity both to earn certification in the Wilderness EMS Medical Director course and to enjoy other curriculum offerings in the exciting new WMS Desert Medicine conference.

Those who are currently serving as a wilderness EMS director, or those considering such a role, are invited to join us in this training venture. With the endorsement and expert guidance from WMS and NAEMSP leaders, we expect this will rapidly become the industry standard for Wilderness EMS Medical Directors.  Those of you whose work bridges the EMS and Wilderness Medicine world will find it a memorable learning experience that provides critical and practical skills for your leadership role.

This course will be taught by:

Seth Hawkins, MD, FACEP, FAWM

Michael Millin, MD, MPH, FACEP

Will Smith, MD, EMT-P, FAWM

Co-sponsored by the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP).
